Ford EcoSport – Ford exits India operations in 2021/22.

The debate around E20 petrol has taken a new turn after a Ford EcoSport owner reportedly received a warning from Ford India customer service about the potential impact of using E20 fuel in his vehicle. The development comes just days after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued an official clarification defending India’s ethanol blending program, saying the E20 fuel is scientifically validated and continuously monitored by the government.

Ford Customer Service Feedback

The matter came to light when screenshots of Ford India customer care responses started circulating on social media. To verify the claim, Rushlane independently contacted Ford India customer care regarding E20 fuel compatibility. The response received was similar to that being shared online.

In its email response, Ford India said: “Using fuel with a high ethanol content (such as E20) can potentially cause damage to the engine or emissions system. It may also increase fuel consumption and affect the validity of your vehicle’s warranty.” The company has advised owners to closely monitor the performance of the vehicle and visit an authorized Ford service center if any abnormality is observed.

This comes after the government’s E20 clarification

The customer service response comes soon after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a detailed statement addressing misleading claims regarding ethanol-blended petrol. The ministry reiterated that India’s ethanol blending program is scientifically validated and there have been no widespread issues of engine failure or vehicle breakdown due to E20 fuel since its launch.

The government also rejected several viral claims circulating on social media, including allegations linking E20 fuel to insect attraction and concerns about vehicle insurance validity. According to the ministry, the higher ethanol blend has been introduced only after extensive technical assessment and consultation with automobile manufacturers and other stakeholders.

Important references for old vehicles

While the government’s statement focuses on the overall safety and implementation of E20 fuel, many older vehicles sold before E20 compatibility standards were introduced were originally engineered for lower ethanol blends.

Several manufacturers have previously released compatibility lists detailing which of their vehicles can safely run on E20 fuel and which may require modification or recommending continuing to use lower ethanol blends where available. Ford’s response may therefore refer to Exclusively for the older EcoSport variants and vehicles not originally certified for E20 use, rather than making blanket statements about E20 fuel.

questions still remain

The government’s recent clarifications have mainly addressed concerns related to vehicle safety, engine reliability and misinformation circulating online. However, it did not directly address the issues Frequently raised by vehicle owners Such as the fuel efficiency loss associated with higher ethanol blending, the impact on operating costs, or whether consumers benefit financially from the transition to E20 fuel.

The latest Ford customer service response is likely to add further momentum to the ongoing discussion among vehicle owners, especially those driving older vehicles that were not originally developed for higher ethanol blends. Until Ford issues an official clarification, it is unclear whether the customer service email reflects the company’s official position regarding E20 fuel compatibility in its Indian vehicle lineup.
