India’s two-wheeler retail market recorded good year-on-year growth in May 2026, although sales declined on a month-on-month basis. Total retail sales in May 2026 stood at 18,44,947 units, up 7.54% compared to 17,15,581 units sold in May 2025. This resulted in an increase of 1.29 lakh units on annual basis. However, compared to April 2026, retail sales declined by 3.72%, with volumes falling by more than 71,000 units. The slowdown was visible across most major manufacturers, although some brands managed to buck the trend.

Hero MotoCorp continued to lead the two-wheeler retail market with sales of 5,17,951 units in May 2026. However, the growth rate remained modest at 2.09% year-on-year, with just over 10,600 units added compared to the same month last year. Hero’s share in total two-wheeler retail sales during the month stood at 28.07%.

Honda took the second position with 4,52,420 units, registering a strong growth of 9.39% YoY. The company added approximately 39,000 units in May 2025 and achieved a market share of 24.52%. TVS Motor retained the third position with retail sales of 3,56,352 units. The company recorded a growth of 11.53% year-on-year by adding 36,834 units. TVS’s market share now stands at 19.32%. Hero, Honda and TVS accounted for about 72% of all two-wheeler retail sales in India during May 2026.

Bajaj Auto reported retail sales of 1,97,738 units registering a marginal growth of 1.96% compared to May 2025. The company maintained a market share of 10.72%. Suzuki continued its steady pace with sales at 97,885 units, up 5.12% year-on-year. Royal Enfield sold 84,480 motorcycles, a growth of 3.44% compared to last year.

Among the mainstream brands, Yamaha had the strongest performance. Sales rose 16.49% to 60,625 units, up more than 8,500 units year-on-year. Classic Legends, which sells Jawa, Yezdi and BSA motorcycles, more than doubled its sales to 4,447 units, registering a growth of 103.06%.

EV brands show strongest growth

The biggest gains came from electric two-wheeler manufacturers. Ather Energy doubled its retail sales to 28,240 units, registering a significant growth of 100.27%. The company added over 14,000 units as of May 2025 and emerged as India’s fastest growing major EV brand.

However, Ola Electric saw a decline. Retail sales fell 20.17% to 15,141 units, 3,826 units less than the same period last year. Among smaller EV players, River EV registered a growth of 245.08% with sales of 3,720 units, while BeGos grew by 204.71% at 3,297 units. Greaves Electric Mobility (Ampere) also recorded a strong growth of 77.92%, reaching 7,695 units.

Petrol-powered two-wheelers continued to dominate with 90.68% market share in May 2026. However, this was down from 93.67% in May 2025, indicating a gradual shift towards alternative powertrains. Reflecting the growing acceptance of electric scooters and motorcycles, EVs increased their share to 9.25% from 6.11% a year ago and 7.92% in April 2026. Meanwhile, CNG/LPG two-wheelers remained a niche segment with only 0.07% market share despite recent product launches. data shows EVs continue to cause harm Petrol continues to dominate and is now close to achieving double digit share in India’s two-wheeler retail market.
