Earlier, it was the hybrid/ICE variant that was spied – the BEV version of the Starlight SUV will directly rival the Mahindra XEV 9S.
MG Motor will launch several new models this year with an aim to strengthen its presence in India’s fast-growing SUV market. One of these is the new SUV based on the Wuling Starlight. MG has already patented it in India and it is expected to be launched later this year. Earlier, the Starlight SUV has been spied closely showing its road presence. Let’s see the details.
MG Starlight – Exterior Highlights
The MG Starlight is expected to be offered in PHEV and BEV formats. ICE versions are also available in global markets, but are unlikely to be offered in India. MG aims to offer differentiated products to attract the attention of buyers. The PHEV and BEV versions of the Starlight will have relatively little competition to deal with.

This test model is the EV version, which is expected to be a major sales driver for the Starlight in India. Although fine details are not clear due to the heavy camouflage, the overall profile is similar to that seen in the design patent filed by MG Motor. The SUV has distinctive lighting elements and a closed-top grille can also be seen. A straight front fascia, flat bonnet and a prominent bumper ensure an imposing presence for the SUV.
The side profile features square wheel arches, flat body panelling, flat roof and roof rails. In the patent images, features like body cladding, conventional door handles, dual-tone ORVMs and blacked-out A, B and C pillars were noted. The patent images also revealed sporty alloy wheels in 5-spoke format. The test mule’s wheels are completely hidden, although the oversized tires can still be seen.

As per the patent images, the D-pillars are body colored and have a distinctive trim in a contrasting shade. At the rear, key features include a dual-tone roof mounted spoiler, a raked windshield and distinctive wraparound taillamps. The design of the boot lid and rear bumper of the SUV is quite simple. In terms of dimensions, the Wuling Starlight measures 4,745 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 1,770 mm in height. Its wheelbase is 2,810 mm.

Key Features, Performance
Positioned as a family-oriented SUV, the USP of the MG Starlight will include its spacious cabin and optimum comfort. Key features offered with the SUV include a 12.8-inch floating touchscreen, a range of remote functions, OTA updates and 4G connectivity. Other key features include column mounted gear selector, panoramic sunroof, leatherette upholstery, wireless charging pad and 180 degree recliner mode.
In global markets, the BEV version of the Starlight has battery pack options of 60 kWh LFP and 69.2 kWh Magic Battery Pro LFP. Range as per CLTC standards is 500-540 km. A single electric motor generates 136 PS and 200 Nm. All versions of the Starlight are offered in FWD configuration.
