We already know that KTM is working on a series of new middleweight motorcycles in the form of the RC 490, ADV 490 and Duke 490. The latest spy shots shared by Motobob reveal what is believed to be the upcoming KTM 490 Duke. The test mule, seen in early prototype form, points to KTM filling a long-standing void in its Duke lineup.
Located between 390 Duke and 790 Duke
KTM’s current naked lineup sees a notable jump from the 390 Duke (~43 hp) to the 790 Duke (~95 hp). The new bike is expected to slot right in the middle, producing around 55 to 60 hp, making it a more accessible step-up option for riders. This positioning also helps KTM address the void left by the old 690 Duke, providing a balanced middleweight option.
The new model is expected to feature a parallel twin engine, unlike the single-cylinder setup seen on the 390 Duke. The spy shots show a bulky engine layout and packaging in line with the twin-cylinder configuration. The move is in line with KTM’s strategy as seen on the RC 490 and ADV 490 platforms (also under development), although the timeline for that project has changed several times.
Hardware and Components
The overall proportions appear larger than the 390 Duke, but not as aggressive or heavy as the 790, cementing its mid-segment status. Despite the rough and unfinished look of the test mule, the key hardware elements are already visible:
– WP suspension setup (possible USD forks at the front)
– Large front disc brake with radial caliper
– exposed trellis-style frame elements
– Heavy exhaust system, pointing to higher displacement
Design still under development
The test bike is heavily camouflaged with temporary body panels, making it difficult to assess the final design. However, the riding stance, tank shape and sharp front-end proportions suggest that it will retain the aggressive Duke DNA. Expect a cleaner, faster and more production-ready design as KTM gets closer to its unveiling.
When launched, the KTM 490 Duke could become an important product for the brand, especially in markets like India and Europe where demand for mid-range performance bikes is increasing. It will be manufactured in India by Bajaj Auto at its manufacturing plant near Pune.
Launch Timeline?
There is no official confirmation from KTM yet. Looking at the early-stage prototype, the bike is still under development, and the launch may take some time. It could make its debut at EICMA later this year and launch sometime next year. When launched, it will rival the range of middle-weight twin-sill motorcycles from Aprilia, BMW, TVS etc – which are in the process of launching several new products in this segment.
