In India, the demand for SUVs has increased to such an extent that the once popular cars like hatchbacks and sedans are gradually becoming extinct. Within SUVs, the mid-size SUV segment has seen a disproportionate surge. However, more vehicles are about to be launched in this segment, making the segment even more competitive. Existing vehicles are set to get facelifts or new engines or minor updates in the coming future. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming mid-size SUV launch.
Third generation Hyundai Creta
Hyundai is working on the next generation Creta which is expected to be launched in 2027. The testing has already started and the test mules have also been spied. Currently, it is the Creta, which is the best-selling car in the segment and with the intense competition, Hyundai is expected to go ahead with the next generation Creta and even launch a hybrid version of it.
JSW Motors – Chery
Apart from its joint venture with the MG Motor brand, JSW Motors aspires to become an automaker in India. JSW Motors has partnered with China’s Chery Automobile Company and is bringing two EVs in the segment – iCar V23 and Jaecoo J5. Both of these have been spotted testing in India and are expected to be assembled at their new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Toyota debuted the Land Cruiser FJ and it is expected to be launched in India as well. With a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is 4,670 mm long, but expect it to command a premium price. It gets a 2.7L NA petrol engine and can also be offered in India.
Kia Seltos Hybrid
After launching the Seltos in India, Kia Motors has created a global car as it aims for markets like the United States, South Korea and even Europe. In the United States, the Seltos Hybrid gets a 1.6L petrol engine with a battery and electric motor. For India, there are rumors of a localized hybrid system based on the Seltos’ 1.5L NA petrol engine. Either way, a hybrid Seltos is coming and could launch in 2027.
Renault Duster Hybrid
Moving forward with hybrids, Renault India is launching the Duster Hybrid soon. Bookings for the Duster Hybrid opened and the 2026 production slots sold out very quickly. At present the booking has been stopped. The Duster Hybrid, called E-Tech 160, will be based on a 1.8 liter petrol engine along with a 1.4 kWh battery which will deliver a peak total system output of around 160 bhp.

Now that we have mentioned the Renault Duster, we need to talk about its Nissan counterpart. Unlike the previous Duster counterpart called Terrano, Nissan is calling its C SUV ‘Tecton’ and it is expected to carry the same equipment and powertrains as the Duster but will come with unique design and aesthetics.
Hyundai Bayon
Bayon is another mid-size SUV from Hyundai to be launched in India. It is said to be placed below the Creta in the lineup, hinting that the third-generation Creta could be larger and placed in a new price segment. The length could be around 4.2 meters and it could be localized for India with many exclusive interior bits and even a CNG powertrain.
Mahindra XUV7XO
The XUV7XO practically rules the segment it competes in and leaves its rivals behind by a huge margin. Mahindra is now upping its game in this segment with the hybrid version of the XUV7XO. Not much is known about this upcoming system, but Mahindra is reported to be working on PHEV (range extender for EVs) and Strong Hybrid (series hybrid for ICE vehicles).
Tata Sierra EV
After the success of the Sierra ICE SUV, Tata Motors is preparing to launch an electric version of its most important SUV till date. A glimpse of the Sierra EV has been teased as part of its official TVC, confirming that the Sierra EV will get a unique fascia. It is expected to carry the same powertrain as the Harrier EV including a dual motor AWD setup.
Tata Safari EV
Now that Mahindra has launched India’s first electric three-row SUV in the form of the XEV 9S, Tata Motors is preparing a rival in the form of the Safari EV. With the Safari EV, all of Tata’s ICE portfolio will have an electrified version and it will essentially carry all the powertrain combinations as the already popular Harrier EV.
