The Tata Avinya premium electric SUV has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, indicating that development is progressing ahead of its expected 2027 launch.

Tata Motors has been spotted testing the upcoming Avinya electric SUV on public roads in India for the first time. Fully camouflaged prototypes were recently caught on camera, revealing the overall shape and proportions of Tata’s upcoming premium EV. The Avinya range will sit above Tata’s existing electric vehicle portfolio and is expected to usher in a new era for the brand’s premium ambitions.

The heavily camouflaged prototype carries temporary registration plates and hides almost every design detail. However, several styling cues can still be seen. At the front, the SUV features a clean, closed-off fascia like electric vehicles, with vertically stacked lighting elements positioned towards the corners of the bumper. The thin DRLs are probably hidden under the camouflage.

Unlike Tata’s existing SUVs, the Avinya test mule has a much more premium stance. It has a long wheelbase, short front overhang and a gently sloping roofline. Flush-fitting door handles appear to be present, while ORVMs are traditionally mounted on the doors rather than using camera-based units.

The side profile shows large aerodynamic alloy wheels, thick body cladding and relatively long rear doors, suggesting generous cabin space. The rear design is well hidden, although the wraparound tail lamps and roof-mounted spoiler can be seen under the hood. The overall dimensions seem to place it in the premium mid-size SUV category. The interiors haven’t been spied, but patent sketches were leaked earlier this year.

Premium EV based on new architecture

The Avinya program has undergone significant changes over the past year. Earlier reports suggested that the first production model would be based on JLR’s electrified modular architecture (EMA). However, Tata Motors has confirmed that the first Avinya vehicle will use the Freelander platform built by Chery-JLR (CJLR).

The company has said that while the underlying platform originates from CJLR, Tata Motors is developing the vehicle around its own design, engineering, software and integration capabilities. Production is planned at the recently inaugurated TMPV-JLR manufacturing facility at Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.

Expected battery, range and launch timeline

Although official specifications remain under wraps, industry reports suggest the first Avinya electric SUV could be introduced Battery packs between 65 kWh and 80 kWhTargeting a premium electric SUV segment with competitive driving range and performance.

The first production model is expected to be called Avinya Additional SUVs and larger electric vehicles are expected to arrive in the coming years.

Tata EVs sales increased

Tata Motors’ premium EV plans come at a time when its electric vehicle business is gaining momentum. Monthly EV sales are nearing the 15,000 unit mark due to strong demand for models like Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV and Harrier EV. The recently launched Sierra EV is expected to drive further sales growth, with the company already working on increasing production to meet the growing demand. With Avinya, Tata Motors aims to move beyond the mass market EV sector and establish a presence in the premium electric SUV segment as well.
