Hyundai i20 has crossed the 15 lakh cumulative sales mark in India. Launched in 2008, the i20 has spent nearly two decades in the Indian market and has evolved over three generations. it remains One of Hyundai’s longest running nameplates In the country.

This milestone comes at an interesting time for the hatchback segment. SUVs now account for a larger share of India’s passenger vehicle market, while premium hatchback volumes have declined from their earlier highs. Despite this change, the i20 remains an important part of Hyundai’s Indian portfolio.

Hyundai i20 – 15 lakh sales since 2008

When the i20 arrived in 2008, it was positioned as a more premium hatchback and eventually took over the space previously occupied by the Getz. In subsequent generations, Hyundai progressively added features, larger screens, connected technology and more safety equipment.

Currently, the i20 is in its third generation in India. The range has also expanded from the standard hatchback, with the i20 N Line providing a sportier option. Hyundai additionally offers special editions like the i20 Night Edition. The price ranges from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11.74 lakh.

Crossing 15 lakh sales means Hyundai has sold an average of over 83,000 i20s annually during its nearly 18-year presence in India. However, sales have naturally varied significantly between generations and changing market conditions.

Current i20 – Petrol only

The current Hyundai i20 is offered with a 1.2-litre Kappa naturally aspirated petrol engine. Transmission options include 5-speed manual and IVT automatic. For buyers seeking more performance, Hyundai offers the i20 N Line with a 1.0-litre turbo GDI petrol engine. It is available with a 6-speed manual as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Equipment includes six airbags as standard, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and navigation system, electric sunroof, wireless charger and over 60 connected-car features via Hyundai BlueLink. Other features include ESC, hill start assist, Bose 7-speaker audio, dashcam and TPMS.

The premium hatchback market has changed

The journey of the i20 also reflects the changing preferences of Indian car buyers. Premium hatchbacks once occupied an important middle ground between entry-level small cars and sedans. In recent years, compact SUVs have increasingly occupied that niche.

Hyundai has now positioned the Venue in the sub-4 meter SUV segment, while the Exeter caters to buyers at a lower price point. Despite these interior and exterior options, Hyundai has continued to make the i20 and expand its appeal through the N Line and special editions.

Next-gen Hyundai i20 has already been revealed

While the current Hyundai i20 has crossed the 15 lakh sales mark in India, the nameplate was the star-car at the recent FIFA World Cup finals in the US. This is because the next-generation i20 has been launched in Brazil, bringing a significantly refreshed design with updates in the cabin, technology and features.

The new generation model also highlights the importance Hyundai places on the i20 nameplate. Hyundai has not yet announced the India launch timeline for the new generation i20. However, given that India has historically been an important market for the i20, the new model may eventually arrive here as a replacement for the current generation hatchback.
