Tata Motors continues its leadership in the segment while Mahindra and Kia have seen significant demand growth

The EV segment in India has entered 2026 with strong momentum in passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, while sales of electric three-wheelers and commercial vehicles have also seen strong growth. This growth reflects improving buyer confidence in electric mobility, supported by the expansion of charging infrastructure, continued influx of new models and continued government incentives.

Here we specifically talk about electric car retail sales in January 2026 and its performance on year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) basis. According to retail sales data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), sales of major electric car makers in India rose to 18,470 units in January 2026, up 54.75% from 11,935 units in January 2025. On MoM basis, sales grew 23.59% from 14,944 units in December 2025.

Electric Car Sales Breakup – Tata Motors Leading

Tata Motors, with the largest electric car portfolio in India, once again tops the list. Sales last month stood at 8,007 units. This was a YoY growth of 50.71% compared to 5,313 units, while MoM sales also ended on a positive note with a growth of 23.95% compared to 6,460 units in December 2025. JSW MG Motor, driven by the strong performance of its Windsor, sold 4,703 units last month, up 3.82% from 4,530 units YoY, while MoM sales saw a sharp growth. 32.14% of the 3,559 units sold a month ago.

Mahindra stood at third place with sales of 3,668 units last month. This was an increase of 395.68% year-on-year from only 740 units sold in January 2025. MoM sales were also positive with a growth of 18.98%. The company is expected to register higher sales with the recent launch of the XEV 9S, India’s first mainstream electric three-row seven-seater SUV.

Comparative newcomer Vinfast, ranked No. 4, also saw rapid expansion, clocking retail sales of 435 units in January 2026, a year-on-year growth of 15.67%. Hyundai Motor’s electric car sales stood at 33 units which was a steady growth year-on-year while MoM sales increased by 26.62%. BMW India sales also grew by 65.46% YoY to 321 units, while its MoM performance turned negative by 6.96%.

Kia India electric car sales increased by 505%

Kia India recorded electric car retail sales of 309 units last month, an improvement of 505.88% year-on-year. However, BYD India sales declined 31.66% YoY and 2.53% MoM to 231 units. The company’s first electric car Maruti Evitara sold 215 units last month. This was a 2288.89% MoM increase from only 9 units sold in December 2025. Interestingly, Maruti has not started retail sales or announced the price of the Evitara, but it is still included in the list.

Mercedes-Benz is also included in this list with 70 units sold. While year-on-year sales declined by 32.69%, the company recorded a growth of 2.94% in its MoM performance. Stellantis sales fell sharply by 41 percent, while Tesla sales also dropped to 37 units, down 45.59% from 68 unit sales in December 2025. Volvo sold 36 units of its electric cars in India last month, while other OEMs added 64 units to the total retail sales.
