
The segment is seeing strong growth in electric car sales in India led by Tata Motors with a wide portfolio
The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly. New product launches, improving charging infrastructure, lower operating costs, government incentives and wider options have played a significant role in boosting sales in this segment. After Mahindra, Tata Motors has the largest portfolio of electric cars, while Maruti Suzuki along with MG Motors and VinFast are also leading players.
Considering major electric vehicle manufacturers, total sales in the calendar year 2026 (CY2026) stood at 79,063 units. Demand has seen an improvement from January 2026 when sales stood at 18,851 units. This dropped to 14,438 units in February 2026, but further increased to 23,097 units in March 2026, however, as per VAHAN details, it dropped to 22,677 units in April 2026.

In April 2026, the Indian EV market maintained strong momentum, with Tata Motors leading passenger vehicle sales by selling 8,507 units. Mahindra took the second position with 5,394 units, followed by MG Motor India with 4,978 units. Buyers in India are preferring EVs, CNG and hybrids, which together crossed 13.58 lakh units in FY2026, accounting for about 30% of total passenger vehicle sales. EV sales alone are expected to be around 1,99,923 units in FY2026, up 83.6% from 1,08,873 units in FY2025.
OEM wise breakup of EV sales CY2026
Tata Motors led the segment with total sales of 31,604 units in the January to April 2026 period. Sales, which started from 8,410 units in January 2026, declined to 6,002 units in February, but improved strongly to 8,685 units in March. In April 2026, the automaker added 8,507 units to its total. The newly launched Harrier EV as well as models like the Punch and Nexon have contributed to these sales.

Mahindra started the new year with sales of 3,889 units in January 2026. Although sales fell to 3,219 units in February, they increased to 5,651 units in March and 5,394 units in April, taking the total to 18,153 units during the CY2026 period. Mahindra’s sales were driven by the new “born electric” SUV lineup, which includes the BE6 and XEV 9e.
Total sales of MG Windsor EV and Comet EV during the CY2026 period reached 19,036 units, while VinFast, a new entrant in the segment, added 2,840 units to the total sales. The company’s EV lineup includes the VF6 and VF7, while a new VFMPV 7 is being added to the lineup soon.

With the sole offering of the Evitara premium electric SUV, Maruti Suzuki occupies a fairly limited space in the segment. Sales during the period CY2026 stood at 2,667 units and there was a significant increase in sales every month. Maruti plans to introduce new offerings that will include the YMC electric MPV, a sub-4 meter SUV and an EV hatchback.
Hyundai was down on the list at number six with sales of 1,707 units in CY2026. BYD also saw rising demand in the segment with sales of 1,502 units, while Kia and PCA added 1,443 units and 111 units respectively to total sales for CY2026.
