Mercedes-Benz India’s latest advisory on E20 compatibility has sparked widespread debate online, with some people using the company’s owner manual to question the claim.

India’s No. 1 luxury car brand, Mercedes-Benz has found itself at the center of an online debate after it issued a customer advisory stating that all Mercedes-Benz BS VI petrol vehicles are physically compatible with E20 fuel. The post shared on the company’s official However, much of the discussion has not been about the E20 fuel, but whether Mercedes-Benz India’s statement matches the information given to customers in its own owner manual.

Mercedes-Benz says all BS6 petrol cars are E20 compatible

The advisory from Mercedes-Benz India reads: “All Mercedes-Benz petrol BS VI vehicles are physically compatible with E20 fuel and certified accordingly by the concerned authorities.” The company said customer safety, vehicle reliability and performance remain the priority and customers are invited to reach out for any technical assistance. However, the statement does not specify model years, production dates or VIN ranges.

statement raises questions

Soon after the advisory was posted, X users started questioning the claim in replies. Many users reported that the fuel filler flap on their cars only mentions E5 and E10 compatibility, while the respective owner manuals available on Mercedes-Benz India’s own website also recommend fuel containing 10% ethanol.

Many people have posted photos of their fuel filler labels along with screenshots of the Mercedes-Benz owner’s manual, asking why the latest advice appears to contradict the information supplied with their vehicles. Some have also questioned whether the company’s latest statement includes earlier BS6 vehicles or whether the advisory only applies to new production models.

Why is there a fuel limit and only mentions up to E10 fuel on your website?

Community Notes adds context

The discussion gained momentum after X’s Community Notes system added the reference below the Mercedes-Benz India post. The note states that many Mercedes-Benz BS6 owners manuals recommend a maximum ethanol content of E10, while cautioning against higher ethanol blends.

Interestingly, the supporting references cited in the community note are official Mercedes-Benz India owner manual pages rather than third-party sources. As per the community note, several manuals clearly mention that the vehicle is suitable for use with E10 fuel, which creates a clear contradiction with the company’s latest advisory claiming compatibility for all BS6 petrol vehicles.

need more clarification

With E20 petrol becoming the standard petrol available across India, the issue has generated considerable interest among Mercedes-Benz owners who want clarity on which fuel their vehicles are actually certified to use. To better understand the advisory, Rushlane contacted Mercedes-Benz India and sought clarification on whether the statement applies to all BS6 petrol vehicles sold after BS6 implementation, whether the earlier owner manuals have been effectively deleted, and why many manuals and fuel filler labels continue to mention only E10 compatibility. At the time of publishing this report, Mercedes-Benz India had not responded to our queries.
