The Indian passenger vehicle market ended FY2026 on a strong note, with total sales crossing the 4.7 million units mark. In terms of fuel, petrol continued to dominate with 52.6% share, followed by CNG with 21.7% share. Diesel contributed 18.4% to total passenger vehicle sales, while EV contributed 4.6%. Hybrid vehicles also saw increasing acceptance among buyers and ended FY2026 with 2.7% market share.
Strong hybrid vehicle sales stood at 1,23,503 units in FY2026. Toyota emerged as the clear leader in the segment, capturing more than 82% of the hybrid passenger vehicle market. The company’s strong lineup including the Innova HiCross, Hayrider, Camry and Vellfire has helped it maintain a dominant position. Maruti Suzuki stood second with 16.47% share, while Honda contributed 0.82%.

Hybrid Car Sales FY2026
The Toyota Innova HighCross was the best-selling hybrid vehicle in India during FY2026. The premium MPV recorded sales of 62,586 units, accounting for a massive 50.68% share of the total hybrid market. Demand for the HyCross remains strong among both private buyers and fleet operators due to its combination of fuel efficiency, spacious cabin and Toyota’s strong hybrid technology.
The Toyota Hayrider took second place with sales of 35,745 units and a market share of 28.94%. The Innova HiCross and Hyder alone contributed about 80% of India’s total hybrid vehicle sales during the financial year.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara stood at the third position with sales of 11,739 units and 9.51% share. The Invicto MPV added 5,350 units during FY26, while the Victoris added 3,247 units. Even though Maruti Suzuki has benefited from Toyota’s hybrid technology partnership, the overall sales volume remained significantly lower than Toyota’s related products.
Toyota Camry continued to attract premium sedan buyers with sales of 2,346 units, while the Vellfire luxury MPV sold 1,483 units. Honda City e:HEV recorded sales of 1,007 units during FY26, becoming Honda’s only hybrid sedan in the Indian market.

Shift towards hybrid SUVs and MPVs
Sales data clearly indicates that Indian buyers currently prefer hybrid SUVs and MPVs over sedans. Toyota has managed to gain a strong lead in this segment with one of the widest hybrid portfolios in India, which includes mass-market SUVs, premium MPVs, sedans and luxury offerings.
Rising fuel prices, better efficiency, lower operating costs and the convenience of not being dependent on charging infrastructure are helping hybrids gain popularity, especially among urban buyers. Hybrid vehicles are being seen as a practical middle ground between traditional ICE vehicles and fully electric cars.
Toyota is expected to further strengthen its hybrid lineup in the coming months. The company is reportedly working on a more affordable version of the Innova Hycross Hybrid for fleet buyers. Toyota is also preparing a new 7-seater version of the urban cruiser Hayrider, which has been spotted testing several times ahead of a possible festive season launch. A hybrid facelift is also under development and is expected to bring feature additions and ADAS updates while continuing with the existing strong hybrid powertrain.
