Toyota Kirloskar Motor has overtaken other carmakers operating in India as the company has voluntarily moved ahead with the upcoming WLTP certification. The first vehicle to receive WLTP certification in India is the Lexus LM luxury minivan. This way India will be in line with international testing procedures with WLTP certification.
WLTP certification started in India
The Worldwide Harmonized Light Duty Test Procedure (WLTP) is a globally accepted and standardized vehicle testing procedure. Its purpose is to measure vehicle fuel efficiency, energy consumption and exhaust emissions. WLTP test procedures have been used in global markets such as Europe, South Korea and Japan.
Under the new AIS 175 automotive standard, the Indian automotive industry is set to adopt WLTP testing procedures in line with global standards. Currently, India uses MIDC testing procedures (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) and is set to mandate WLTP certification for automobiles from April 1, 2027.
MIDC testing procedures have been criticized by industry experts as it does not mimic real-world conditions. In comparison, WLTP testing procedures use more dynamic testing, which is closer to real-world conditions as it includes variables such as aerodynamics, optional equipment, and vehicle weight.

The deadline has been set by the governing bodies as April 1, 2027 and vehicle manufacturers operating in India are expected to begin the WLTP certification and compliance processes. The move falls under the AIS 175 automotive standard and will make WLTP procedures mandatory on all M1 and M2 category vehicles, including PV and CV (buses and vans) weighing less than 5,000 kg.
Lexus LM is the first vehicle to receive WLTP certification
While the deadline is almost a year ahead, Toyota Kirloskar Motors has taken the initiative and voluntarily undertaken this upcoming testing process. The first vehicle to get WLTP certification in India is the Lexus LM 350h and its variants. Dr. Reji Mathai, Director, ARAI presented the certification to Abhay Kulkarni, General Manager, TKM.
Currently, the Lexus LM 350h is priced between Rs 2.2 crore to Rs 2.75 crore (ex-sh) and is positioned as a flagship luxury MPV for discerning buyers. It promises a serene and lounge-like interior experience for the elite with acres of space on the inside along with all the amenities and comfortable facilities.
