Somvati Amavasya, considered an important occasion in Sanatan Dharma, has created some confusion over its date in June 2026. According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya Tithi starts on 14th June and continues till 15th June. Since the date falls on June 15 at sunrise, that day will be celebrated as Somvati Amavasya. The occasion is associated with the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati as well as rituals for ancestors, holy bath and charity activities.

When is Somvati Amavasya 2026?

According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya Tithi will start at 12:20 AM on Sunday, June 14, 2026 and continue till 8:24 AM on Monday, June 15, 2026.

There is confusion among people whether Amavasya should be celebrated on 14th June or 15th June. According to Udaya Tithi rule, the date which prevails at the time of sunrise is considered valid for observing fasts and festivals. Since Amavasya will be present at sunrise on June 15, it will be observed on Monday, June 15, 2026.
Due to Amavasya falling on Monday, it is known as Somvati Amavasya.

Somvati Amavasya 2026: Auspicious time for bathing and donation

Bathing and donation done in Brahma Muhurta on the day of Somvati Amavasya is considered to be of utmost importance.

  • On June 15, Brahma Muhurta will be from 4:03 am to 4:43 am.
  • Abhijeet Muhurta will be from 11:54 am to 12:50 pm.

Devotees can take bath, worship and do charity work during these periods.

Special yoga on Somvati Amavasya

Sarvarth Siddhi Yoga and Amrit Siddhi Yoga will also be formed on Somvati Amavasya.
The auspicious time will be from 5:23 pm to 7:08 pm.

Somvati Amavasya June 2026 Significance

In Hindu tradition, Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva. When Amavasya falls on Monday, its religious significance increases.

According to religious beliefs, worshiping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the day of Somvati Amavasya brings happiness, prosperity and harmony in married life. This day is also considered auspicious for attaining peace for the ancestors through Tarpan and Shraddha rituals.

It is believed that bathing in a holy river and donating on this day frees the devotees from sins and brings positive energy in life.

Especially married women observe fast on this day for the long life and prosperity of their husbands.

Rituals to be followed on Somvati Amavasya

Devotees are advised to wake up before sunrise and take bath. If possible, taking bath in a holy river like Ganga is considered beneficial.

Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati should be worshiped in a temple or home only. Devotees can perform Abhishekam with water and raw milk and offer Belpatra, Akshat and Tilak. Shiva Aarti and mantra chanting are also part of the observance.

On this day, worshiping and circumambulating the Peepal tree is considered important.

Many devotees also perform Tarpan and Shraddha rituals for their ancestors.

Somvati Amavasya: Importance of charity

Donation has special significance on the day of Amavasya. It is believed that charity done on this day gives manifold results. Commonly donated items include rice, flour, pulses, salt, fruits, vegetables and white colored items like milk and sugar.

What should be avoided on Somvati Amavasya?

On this day, devotees are advised to abstain from meat, alcohol and Tamasic food. Religious traditions also recommend staying away from anger, harsh speech and negative thoughts. People should avoid insulting others, stay away from bad company and maintain peace of mind and positive state of mind during the entire ritual.
