Mitsubishi has just confirmed that they will be reviving the iconic Pajero nameplate in the near future. Along with this, the company will also revive the Montero name, which is a similar vehicle to the Pajero, but will be used for select markets. Like the word Pajero has different meanings in different languages.
Instead of launching the Pajero as a standalone large SUV, Mitsubishi will use the Pajero as a series of vehicles. Think Land Cruiser and Range Rover. According to the roadmap revealed by Mitsubishi, the Pajero name is likely to be used for small punch-sized mini SUVs, compact SUVs and even a Pajero branded minivan.

mitsubishi pajero lineup
Japanese carmaker, Mitsubishi, has just announced the results of its mid-to-long-term strategy. In that, the company revealed a roadmap to launch 13 new vehicles that the company plans to introduce between now and 2031 within the next five years.
In a slide from the presentation, Mitsubishi has revealed three vehicle lineups planned under the Pajero or Montero brand. These vehicles will incorporate Mitsubishi Motors’ DNA (off-road capability, durability/reliability technologies) as well as Mitsubishi motor-ness (eco-friendly, safety technologies, peace of mind and comfort).

One of these three includes the big-daddy Pajero large SUV along with two smaller vehicles. In another slide, Mitsubishi has included 7 vehicles under the off-road product group. All three Pajero vehicles are in the lineup with the company referring to the other two offerings as a compact SUV and a small SUV.
By compact SUV, Mitsubishi means the SUV space, with a length of about 4.2 meters to 4.5 meters, which is currently one of the most popular SUV segments in the world. Then, we have the small SUV segment, which can be less than 4 meters in length in size, which is another hot segment for developing countries. Think of the Tata Punch being sized to take on the Suzuki Jimny.

what to expect?
Apart from these three Pajero SUVs, there is also a minivan, which is classified under the off-road product group. This hints at a potentially rugged MPV with 4WD capability and sliding doors. Looking at the silhouette of this minivan and the way it is placed next to the Pajero vehicles, one can say that this minivan may also be launched under the name Pajero.
It has not been confirmed whether all these Pajero models will be based on the rugged ladder frame SUV, or only the larger Pajero SUV will get the old-school credentials. The large Pajero SUV will be positioned on a modified Triton pickup truck chassis with a dedicated cabin and design language. More information will be given later.
