Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has showcased a new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) developed for defense and security forces, highlighting the company’s focus on building purpose-driven machines for extreme conditions. Although official specifications have not been disclosed, the vehicle appears to be based on the Thar Rocks, albeit substantially modified for military applications. The transformation goes far beyond cosmetic changes, the ATV has been engineered to meet tactical and operational requirements.

Unlike civilian SUVs, this ATV follows a no-nonsense design philosophy. There are no redundant elements, and each component is designed to perform a specific function. The vehicle is equipped with a front-mounted winch, gun mount provision, jerrycan holder for extended range, dual spare wheel setup, full underbody protection and a reinforced windshield guard.

It is also called airdrop-ready, indicating potential air deployment capability. The open-body structure with roll cage prioritizes durability, visibility and ease of operation in harsh environments. From the overall proportions, chassis layout and stance, the ATV appears to share its underpinnings with the Thar Rocks, which is currently on sale for civilian use.

However, the Defense version has been significantly redesigned with lower body panels, advanced structural reinforcements and multiple tactical mounting points. These changes, along with higher ground clearance and heavy-duty hardware, make it more suited to demanding off-road and combat situations.

Possibly based on Thar Rocks platform

Mahindra has not revealed the engine details yet, but based on the Thar Rocks, the ATV can be had with a 2.2 liter diesel engine producing 172 hp and 370 Nm or a 2.0 liter turbo petrol engine producing 174 hp and 380 Nm.

For defense applications, it is likely that a more powerful or specially tuned engine is used with the standard 4WD system. The petrol engine may also be preferred in some scenarios, particularly for high altitude operations where it generally outperforms diesel.

Built for extreme terrain

The overall setup of the ATV shows that it is built to operate in extreme terrains such as mountains, deserts and remote areas. The high ground clearance, aggressive off-road tyres, reinforced bumpers and a minimalist design indicate a focus on reliability, ease of repair and survivability in challenging environments.

Mahindra’s growing defense portfolio

This new ATV also highlights Mahindra’s growing presence in the defense mobility sector. The company already offers a wide range of vehicles for the armed forces, including Armado (ALSV), Marksman, Rakshak and Mine Protected Vehicles. Even platforms like the Scorpio are widely used by the Indian Army for various duties, showcasing Mahindra’s versatility in adapting civilian vehicles for defense roles.

With this ATV, Mahindra once again demonstrates its ability to transform a civilian platform into a specialized machine built for real-world challenges. Although production timelines and deployment details are unknown, the vehicle clearly reflects Mahindra’s core philosophy of flexibility, adaptability and go-anywhere capability.
