The Kia Sorento has been spotted testing on public roads in India for the first time, marking a significant development in the SUV’s journey to India. Earlier visuals were limited to a stationary unit parked inside a building, but the latest spy shots confirm that road testing has officially begun, indicating that development is progressing rapidly ahead of launch.
The test mule spotted on the highways was heavily camouflaged, but its proportions and stance clearly reveal that it is a Sorento. This also strengthens the expectation that Kia is preparing a premium three-row SUV for launch in the near future.
Familiar design, proof of presence on the road
Despite the heavy camouflage, the Sorento’s upright shape and large footprint are clearly visible. The SUV retains its boxy proportions, tall stance and long wheelbase, which contribute to a strong road presence.
From the side, the test mule is seen sporting large alloy wheels and thick body cladding, while the rear appears wide and straight. Details of the tail lamps remain hidden, but their shape suggests updated LED internals similar to the global facelift model. Compared to the earlier indoor scene, this real-world test confirms that Kia is fine-tuning the SUV for Indian conditions.
Premium 3-row SUV positioning
Once launched, the Sorento will sit above the Seltos and Carens in Kia’s India lineup. Globally, it is positioned as a premium family SUV, offering three-row seating and a strong focus on comfort, space and technology. With a length of around 4.8 metres, the Sorento will enter a segment currently dominated by models like the Toyota Innova HighCross, while also offering a more SUV-like stance than its MPV-based rivals.
Possibility of hybrid powertrain
One of the biggest highlights of the Sorento for India is expected to be its hybrid powertrain. Earlier spy details, including the rotary gear selector, hint that the test unit could be a hybrid variant. Globally, the Sorento is offered with multiple powertrain options including petrol, turbo petrol and hybrid setup.
For India, Kia may prefer a strong hybrid variant to suit the growing demand for fuel-efficient premium SUVs. Only a petrol version may also be offered, while a diesel version does not seem possible at this stage.
Made-in-India strategy
Unlike the Carnival, which is assembled via the CKD route, the Sorento is expected to be manufactured at Kia’s Anantapur facility in India. This localization strategy can help Kia has priced the SUV competitivelyProbably in the range of Rs 30-40 lakh. Local production also opens up export possibilities, making the Sorento an important global product from India.
With road testing now underway, the India launch of the Kia Sorento is likely to take place within the next year.
