
Sales of electric cars are increasing in the country and we are seeing steady growth in the EV segment. In the FY26 sales chart, we saw a YoY growth of 83.63% for this segment (collectively). A month ago, we saw the segment perform well with sales of 23,506 units registering a growth of 75.14% YoY and 4.52% MoM.
The month of May 2026 followed the same pattern as its previous month, as India’s electric car segment overall sold 26,682 units as compared to 14,725 units sold in May 2025 and 26,160 units sold in April 2026, registering a growth of 81.2% YoY and 2% MoM. The volume growth recorded by the segment was 11,957 units YoY and 522 units MoM.

Breaking down these numbers further, we can see that within electric car manufacturers, Tata Motors has the highest contribution and took the No. 1 spot with 38.75% market share, up from 35.56% a month ago. Tata sold 10,340 electric cars last month, more than double the 5,083 units sold in May 2025, registering a growth of 103.42% year-on-year.

Compared to 9,302 units sold in April 2026, Tata saw 11.16% MoM growth. In terms of volumes, Tata gained 5,257 units YoY and 1,038 units MoM. Tata Motors has the advantage of being the segment leader as the company has invested in EVs extensively before everyone else.
Bypassing JSW MG Motors, we have Mahindra Auto at second position with 6,210 units, which is more than double the 2,891 units sold last year and registered 114.8% YoY growth and 6.66% MoM growth, with volumes registering a growth of 3,319 units YoY and 388 units MoM. JSW MG Motor remained at the third position with sales of 4,984 units. The maker of Windsor EVs saw 8.37% YoY growth and 8.04% MoM decline.
Maruti Evitara sold 1,591 units last month and witnessed 19.53% MoM growth as compared to 1,331 units sold in April 2026, with a volume increase of 260 units. Vinfast has been expanding its presence in the country and the Vietnamese brand sold 1,238 units with a 4.11% MoM decline. BYD, on the other hand, has jumped on the growth bandwagon as the brand has recorded a growth of 10.47% YoY and 25.41% YoY and volume growth of 65 units YoY and 139 units YoY.

Citroen sold fewer EVs than BMW, Mercedes, BYD, Volvo
Hyundai’s Creta EV sales are on the decline as it is completely in the red with sales of 460 units, down 36.02% YoY and 17.56% MoM. At the eighth position, we have BMW, which sold 352 electric luxury cars, registering a growth of 75.12% YoY and 1.15% MoM. Mercedes at 10th position followed a similar trend with sales of 208 luxury EVs and saw 70.49% YoY and 76.27% MoM growth.
Kia India’s EV sales increased to 349 units from 41 units last year, registering a growth of 751.22% YoY and decline of 13.4% MoM. With 35 units sold, Tesla saw a decline of 18.6% MoM in sales. Volvo sold 29 EVs last month and it was interesting to see a mainstream brand like Citroen below the luxury EV brands as it sold 22 units of the EC3, which is about to get an update as the EC3X. Including other vehicles, 178 units were sold.
