Truly a global product, the Bajaj electric motorcycle will make its debut in export markets before being introduced in India

Bajaj has tasted success in the electric two-wheeler segment, with the Chetak garnering a market share of over 22%. Bajaj is at second place after TVS in the list of best selling electric two-wheeler brands. To maintain this momentum, Bajaj will introduce new variants of the Chetak in the coming weeks. Bajaj is also working on a brand new electric motorcycle, which is likely to be introduced as a premium product offering.

Bajaj’s new electric motorcycle – what to expect?

The development of the new electric motorcycle has been confirmed by Bajaj Chief Financial Officer Dinesh Thapar. Dinesh talked about this development during the company’s Q1, FY27 earnings conference call. He said that the development of the bike is going on at a constant pace. If everything goes as per plan, Bajaj’s first electric motorcycle could be launched around FY28.

Dinesh said that the new electric bike will initially be targeted at export markets. The India launch is expected later, possibly in late 2028 or early 2029. Bajaj will be keen to capture this segment as it has huge growth potential. India’s electric two-wheeler segment is dominated by electric scooters, with a market share of over 95%.

Moreover, there are only a few players in the electric motorcycle segment. Established brands like Hero, TVS and Honda have not yet launched any electric motorcycle in India. These scenarios present a good opportunity for Bajaj. The brand has a large global presence, which can be leveraged for its new electric motorcycle.

While the electric motorcycle has been confirmed, Bajaj has not shared any technical specifications. It is likely that the project is currently in the early development phase with internal testing of various components. It will be interesting to see whether Bajaj launches its first electric motorcycle under the Pulsar brand or chooses a completely new brand.

favorable market conditions

In India, the current preference is obviously for electric scooters. However, electric motorcycles may also see a rise in demand when established brands like Bajaj enter the segment. Bajaj’s new electric motorcycles and its existing Chetak lineup could benefit from the evolving policy scenario. For example, the Delhi government plans to completely stop the sale of ICE two-wheelers from April 1, 2028.

Similar rules may also be implemented in other cities or states in the future. Such developments will lead to a huge increase in demand for electric two-wheelers. Brands that are prepared with the right product will benefit. Bajaj has also said that it will introduce new variants of Chetak in the next 6 weeks. These will help in meeting the peak demand of the festive season.

Bajaj has already increased the production capacity of Chetak from 50,000 units to 60,000 units per month. Bajaj is also aiming to increase its total production capacity to over 9 million units per annum from the current 7.2 million units. This increased production capacity will be used primarily for electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers and premium motorcycles.
