Since Jeff Bezos-backed Slate Auto is currently focused on the US market, a launch in other global markets could take a few years
Slate Auto, an American EV startup, was launched in 2022. Its first product, the Slate Truck, was revealed in April 2025. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is one of its major investors in the startup. Slate Auto is preparing to unveil its production-ready electric pickup truck in the United States on June 24. Interestingly, Slate Auto has also patented its electric pickup and SUV in India.
Slate Auto electric pickup and SUV patented in India
In ICE vehicles, powertrain choices are one of the major purchasing considerations. This has changed dramatically with electric vehicles, as the focus has shifted to factors such as range and features. Slate Auto is thinking similarly, focusing on DIY solutions and a wide range of customization options. This approach could help the brand differentiate itself from rival electric cars in the mainstream segment.
The patent in India could indicate that the company is trying to protect its IP (intellectual property) here and it is unclear whether the Amazon-backed Slate Auto will debut in India or not. In the United States, Slate Auto is offering a high level of customization to its customers.
For example, all units will have the same color at the time of production. Buyers will have the option to continue using the same colors or choose from 54 original wraps. Buyers can also choose from 45-50 options with metallic finishes and other designs. Instead of having the wraps installed at the factory, Slate Auto is offering these as DIY projects for buyers. Customers who may find the task challenging can hire an expert to complete the task.

Apart from wraps, the slate will also offer a wide range of auto accessories. These can be installed by the owner or a technician can be hired for the work. Slate has ensured that installation of accessories is easy. When done as a DIY project, owners can get assistance from the official app. It provides detailed instructions on how to properly install various accessories.
Another USP of the Slate Auto will be its competitive pricing. The brand is offering a bare-bones electric pickup, which may be the most accessible in the US market. Recent reports point to a source code leak, which puts the starting price of the pickup at $24,950 (Rs 23.72 lakh). However, it is not certain whether such claims are true or not. Official pricing is expected to be revealed on June 24.
With their no-frills approach, the base variant of Slate Auto’s electric pickup can easily fetch an estimated $24,950 price point. The pickup uses plastic body panels instead of sheet metal, which also helps reduce production costs. A wide range of accessories are available for customers who want to upgrade. Pre-orders will begin from June 24 and deliveries are expected to begin by the end of this year.

India launch possibilities
While Slate Auto has filed a design patent in India, this is more likely to be a standard procedure to secure its intellectual property (IP). It does not confirm an immediate launch in India. Slate Auto will first focus on the US market before expanding to other locations. There is significant potential in the EV sector in India and Slate Auto may consider entering this market at some point in the future.
