Tesla may have created a big stir in the global EV market initially, but BYD has overtaken the American giant in terms of global EV sales. BYD already has a good lineup of imported vehicles in India. These include Atto 3, eMAX 7, Seal and Sealion 7. BYD is now reportedly working on an India-specific model.

This way, BYD can connect with Indian buyers more as per their likes and preferences instead of forcing them with its global models. This strategy has worked for many OEMs who have adopted a similar approach. Let’s take a closer look at the possibilities.

BYD India-specific models

After launching the Celiant 7 in India, BYD has been quietly working on an India-specific model which has not been revealed anywhere yet. It is looking to expand its overseas presence, especially in growing markets like India. Currently, India is the third largest automotive market surpassing Japan and increased consumption has also contributed to the growth.

BYD is working on a new model for the Indian market, the company’s executive vice president Stella Lee told AFP. Although the launch timeline has not been disclosed, BYD engineers at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen are said to have started working with the design of this new model, suggesting that this India-specific model is under development.

made in India?

For BYD, India is becoming a major growth market and a major economy and it is betting big on the Indian market. However, Stella Lee confirmed that BYD is not planning to set up a vehicle assembly facility in India. This new India-specific model can be manufactured outside India and then brought into the country through the CBU route.

At the moment, BYD is focusing more on its product strategy rather than setting up manufacturing facilities in India. By improving its overseas business, BYD can consolidate its current position as the world’s leading electric car maker by volume.

It is important for BYD to maintain the growth momentum as the company’s domestic sales have been gradually declining. In January 2026, BYD saw its domestic sales decline for the fifth consecutive month. This decline in sales is being said to be due to the change in subsidies given by the Chinese government for electric vehicles.
