Hyundai has unveiled the Neira prototype at GIIAS 2026 in Indonesia. Officially described by Hyundai as a seven-seat electric SUV, the Nira has been developed with Indonesian families in mind and local production is planned. Interestingly, its overall proportions and design are quite similar to the Kia Carens Clavis EV that is on sale in India.

From the side, the Nira’s overall silhouette, long roofline, window area and three-row proportions look similar to the Kia Carens Clavis. This raises the possibility that the Neera may share its platform, electric powertrain and many other components with the Carens EV.

Such a strategy would not be unusual. Hyundai and Kia already share platforms, powertrains and technology across several products. In India, the Creta and Seltos are prime examples, where common underpinnings are combined with different exterior and interior designs. Hyundai hasn’t confirmed any technical connection between the Nira and the Carens EV, so it remains a possibility based on their similarities.

Typical Hyundai Style

Despite the familiar proportions, the Nira clearly gets a Hyundai facelift. It features a wide LED light signature at the front, vertically positioned lighting elements and a massive closed-off fascia suitable for an EV. A thick silver section around the lower bumper adds some visual toughness.

Other highlights include dual-tone alloy wheels, black wheel-arch cladding, roof rails, conventional door handles and silver lower-body elements. At the rear, the vertically positioned LED tail lamps are connected to a thin horizontal light element similar to the Carens Clavis. Silver and black detailing is given on the heavy rear bumper. These elements give the Nira a more SUV-inspired look, even though its overall proportions are quite MPV-like.

Seven seats, local production confirmed

Kenny Lee, president director of Hyundai Motors Indonesia, described the Nira as a seven-passenger electric SUV combining a spacious cabin with Hyundai’s latest EV technology. More importantly, Hyundai plans to manufacture the production model locally at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI). The company says the Neera will continue to be refined ahead of its final market launch, as the vehicle displayed at GIIA is still a prototype.

Technical specifications have not been announced yet. Battery capacity, range, motor output and charging capabilities are kept under wraps. If the Nera shares its underpinnings with the Carens Clavis EV, some of these components could potentially be common between the two models. For now, the Hyundai Nira appears to be another example of Hyundai-Kia’s platform-sharing strategy, but packaged and styled specifically for Hyundai and the Indonesian market.
