
In the previous post, we took a look at the sales of sub 4 meter SUVs last month. In this post, let’s take a look at the mid-size SUV segment (4.2 m to 4.5 m), which has seen strong demand in May 2026, with total sales growing 68.2% year-on-year to 70,836 units, as against 42,104 units sold in May 2025. However, on a month-on-month basis, the segment’s volumes declined 4.4% to 74,098 units. April 2026.
4.2m to 4.5m SUV sales May 2026
Hyundai Creta and Creta Electric remained the best-selling models in the segment with combined sales of 15,235 units in May 2026. The SUV recorded a marginal growth of 2.5% compared to 14,860 units sold in May 2025. The Creta achieved a segment share of 21.5%, meaning more than one in every five mid-size SUVs sold in the country during May had the Creta badge. On a month-on-month basis, sales remained largely flat with a slight decline of 0.4%.

Maruti Suzuki’s new Victoris continues to make a strong impact in the segment. The SUV recorded sales of 10,853 units in May and took the second position with 15.3% market share. Kia Seltos has emerged as one of the most profitable companies in this segment. Sales grew 74.2% year-on-year to 10,597 units compared to 6,082 units sold in May 2025. SUVs took the third position with 15% segment share.
Maruti Grand Vitara followed closely behind with 9,366 units as compared to last year’s 5,197 units, registering an impressive growth of 80.2%. Grand Vitara also registered a good growth of 21.4% month-on-month, making it one of the strongest performers during the month. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Highrider recorded sales of 8,664 units, marking a growth of 14.4% compared to May 2025. SUVs continued to benefit from strong demand for hybrid powertrains and accounted for 12.2% share in the segment.

Tata Sierra took the sixth position with sales of 6,606 units. Since the model was not on sale during the same period last year, year-on-year comparisons will not apply. Tata Curve and Curve EV recorded combined sales of 1,680 units, which saw a sharp decline of 45.2% compared to May 2025. However, volumes improved by about 20% compared to April 2026.
The MG ZS EV was one of the biggest gainers, with sales up 333.9% year-on-year to 1,562 units. Electric SUVs also recorded a strong month-on-month growth of 117.9%. Skoda Kushaq crossed the 1,300-unit mark with sales of 1,310 units and a healthy growth of 103.4% over last year. Volkswagen Taigun stood second with 1,281 units, up 13.8%.

Renault Duster recorded sales of 1,267 units, while Honda Elevate sold 1,224 units, down 16.2% compared to May 2025. Mahindra BE6 recorded sales of 902 units, down 25.2% year-on-year. XUV400 sales declined by 55% to 129 units. The MG Astor, Citroen C3 Aircross and Citroen Basalt continued to see limited demand, selling 59 units, 58 units and 43 units respectively.
Performance as per OEM
Maruti Suzuki emerged as the No. 1 player in the 4.2m to 4.5m SUV segment with 20,219 units and 28.5% market share, led by the strong performance of the Victories and Grand Vitara. Hyundai stood second with 15,235 units as the Creta remained the best-selling individual model despite rising competition. Hyundai plans to launch a new 4.2 meter SUV (under the Creta) later this financial year, which will strengthen the company’s position in the segment.
Kia registered a healthy growth of 74% YoY with Seltos crossing 10,500 units, while Toyota maintained a strong pace with Highrider sales of 8,664 units. Tata Motors was another major beneficiary, with the Sierra and Curve helping the brand garner 8,286 units, up more than 170% year-on-year.
Among smaller players, MG recorded strong growth thanks to the ZS EV, while Skoda Kushaq sales more than doubled. In contrast, decline was seen in Honda, Mahindra and Citroen. Overall, the segment is increasingly dominated by Maruti, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota and Tata, which together account for around 89% of total sales.
