In the previous post, we discussed sub 4m SUV sales as well as mid SUV sales in the 4.2m to 4.5m segment. Now let’s take a look at the 4.5 meter to 4.8 meter SUV segment, which has recorded total sales of 37,054 units in April 2026, up 13.91% from 32,530 units sold in April 2025.

Mahindra continues to dominate the segment with a range of products including the Scorpio, XUV7XO and XEV lineup contributing the majority share in the segment volume. The Scorpio/N was the best-selling SUV in the range with sales of 14,719 units. However, volumes declined slightly by 5.25% compared to 15,534 units sold in the same month last year. Despite the decline, Scorpio alone accounted for 39.72% of total segment sales.

Mahindra’s XUV7XO took the second position with 8,630 units, registering 26.71% YoY growth. The company’s electric SUV portfolio also contributed strongly, with the XEV 9S registering 3,242 units in its first full year in the market. Meanwhile, the XEV 9e saw a 34% decline year-on-year with sales falling to 1,611 units. Overall, Mahindra achieved 73.51% share in the segment, further strengthening its position in India’s premium SUV sector.

Tata Motors also saw good growth. Harrier/EV sales grew 151.48% YoY to 2,545 units due to rising demand for EV variants. Tata Safari registered a marginal growth of 9.48% with sales of 1,467 units. Toyota Fortuner sales declined 22.42% year-on-year to 2,253 units, although it still remains one of the best-selling SUVs in the category. MG Hector/Plus registered a healthy growth of 32.75% registering sales of 1,297 units.

Hyundai Alcazar witnessed a decline of 16.42% with sales of 850 units during the month. The Jeep Compass and Meridian struggled with low volumes, while the Volkswagen Teron entered the segment with 87 units. Among premium European offerings, the Skoda Kodiaq registered a growth of 8.41% with sales of 116 units, while the Volkswagen Tiguan declined by a massive 62.64%.

Segment sales have declined sequentially

Total segment sales declined by 5.42% compared to March 2026. The Scorpio/N was one of the few models to register positive MoM growth at 0.97%. MG Hector/Plus emerged as the biggest MoM gainer with 52.59% growth, while Skoda Kodiaq posted 81.25% sequential growth on relatively lower volumes.

Toyota Fortuner saw the sharpest monthly decline of 40.63%, while Tata Harrier/EV, XUV7XO and Alcazar also recorded lower sales compared to March 2026. The segment remains heavily SUV-centric, with Mahindra enjoying a commanding lead through its strong mix of ICE and EV offerings.
