After looking at SUV sales last month, let’s now look at hatchback sales. India’s hatchback segment recorded total sales of 92,837 units in May 2026, registering a healthy growth of 25.29% as compared to 74,100 units sold in May 2025. However, compared to April 2026, hatchback sales declined by 3.2% to 95,907 units. Maruti Suzuki continued its dominance in the segment, capturing six of the top nine spots and accounting for more than three-quarters of total hatchback sales.

Leading the charts was Maruti Baleno with sales of 18,396 units, up 58.34% from 11,618 units sold a year ago. Baleno achieved 19.82% share in the hatchback market. Trailing behind was Maruti WagonR, which sold 18,076 units, registering a growth of 29.59% compared to May 2025. Maruti Swift took the third position with 17,519 units, a growth of 23.94% YoY. Collectively, Baleno, WagonR and Swift accounted for around 54,000 units, contributing around 58% to total hatchback sales during the month.
Maruti Alto was also among the best performers, almost doubling its sales. Alto sales stood at 9,887 units as against 4,970 units a year ago, registering a massive growth of 98.93%. Even more impressive was the Maruti S-Presso, which grew from 1,806 units in May 2025 to 6,388 units in May 2026, registering a growth of 253.71%. Maruti’s strong performance was also supported by Celerio, which recorded sales of 3,018 units, a growth of 62.17% year-on-year.
Hyundai i20 leads the non-Maruti pack
Among non-Maruti hatchbacks, Hyundai i20 emerged as the best-selling model with 4,749 units, registering a YoY growth of 16.11%. However, the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS saw a decline of 32.78%, with sales falling to 2,920 units from 4,344 units sold in May 2025. Tata Tiago and Tiago EV sales stood at 4,178 units, down 34.79% from 6,407 units sold a year ago. Tiago also witnessed a significant month-on-month decline of 23.87%.
Similarly, Toyota Glanza sales fell 32.72% to 3,198 units in May 2025 compared to 4,753 units. Tata Altroz remained relatively stable, registering a marginal growth of 4.89% with sales of 2,915 units. The electric MG Comet EV recorded sales of 869 units, up 5.59% year-on-year and 44.59% improvement compared to April 2026.
The Citroen C3 recorded the highest percentage growth in the segment, growing by 256.36% to 392 units, although volumes remained relatively low. On the other hand, Renault Kwid sales declined 44.44% year-on-year to 300 units, while Citroen eC3 EV sold just 32 units during the month.

While the year-on-year figures remain encouraging, the month-on-month performance suggests some softness in demand. Overall hatchback sales declined by more than 3,000 units compared to April 2026. Major gainers on a monthly basis include the S-Presso (+22.6%), Celerio (+31.4%), Altroz (+12.7%) and MG Comet EV (+44.6%). Most other key models including WagonR, Swift, Alto, i20 and Tiago recorded month-on-month decline.
Performance as per OEM
At the OEM level, Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the hatchback segment with sales of 73,284 units in May 2026, registering a strong growth of 46% year-on-year and accounting for about 79% of total hatchback sales. The growth was driven by strong demand for Baleno, WagonR, Swift, Alto and S-Presso. Hyundai retained second place with 7,669 units, although sales declined 9% year-on-year.
Tata Motors’ sales also declined by 22.8% to 7,093 units, mainly due to lower sales of Tiago. Toyota’s sales fell 32.7% with the Glanza falling 32.7%, while Renault’s Kwid fell 44.4%. Citroen emerged as the fastest growing brand with a growth of 149%, albeit on a relatively small base. Overall hatchback sales grew 25.3% to 92,837 units, with Maruti Suzuki contributing the bulk to the segment growth.
