Tata Motors has confirmed that the Nexon will be sold as the ‘Osprey’ in South Africa, with the launch scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) has announced that its popular compact SUV, the Nexon, will be introduced in South Africa under a new name – Tata Osprey. The company confirmed that the SUV will join its South African lineup during the third quarter of 2026.

While in India this vehicle is sold under the name of Tata Nexon, in South Africa it will be available with the Osprey nameplate. Tata says the new name is inspired by the Osprey bird of prey, reflecting the local relevance as well as the adventurous character and versatility of the SUV.

Tata Nexon gets a new identity!

The Tata Osprey is essentially the same SUV that is sold as the Nexon in India. Tata highlighted that the SUV has crossed one million customers globally and has emerged as India’s best-selling car on several occasions in recent years. Last month Nexon was the number 2 selling car in the country, number 1 was Tata Punch.

The company also used the announcement to highlight the model’s strong safety credentials. Tata said the Osprey was the first car in India to receive a five-star Global NCAP safety rating and it also has a 5-star India NCAP rating. For South African buyers, Tata is presenting the Nexon as an SUV with bold styling, advanced technology, premium interior and high safety standards, making it suitable for both city driving and adventure-focused lifestyle.

South Africa continues to expand

Tata Motors passenger vehicle Exports are steadily gaining momentumAnd the addition of the Osprey to its international lineup could give it a further boost. In June 2026, Tata PV exported 700 units, registering a healthy growth of 45% year-on-year, with overseas volumes expected to increase further as the company expands into more global markets.

Tata says the Osprey will play a key role in expanding its passenger vehicle portfolio in South Africa, where the company is gradually rebuilding its presence. Commenting on the announcement, Jeff Allison, General Manager – Marketing & ProductTata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa said the Osprey addresses the growing customer demand for modern styling, technology, practicality, safety and value for money.

He said the new SUV represents another milestone for Tata Motors in South Africa following the brand’s return to the market, reflecting its commitment to offering globally competitive products to local customers.

Same SUV, different badge

Apart from the name change, Tata has not indicated any significant mechanical or structural differences between the Indian-spec Nexon and the South African-spec Osprey. More details about engine options, variant lineup and pricing are expected closer to its launch in the third quarter of 2026.
