
India’s sub-compact SUV segment (3.8-4 metres) saw good demand in January 2026, with total sales reaching 1,21,150 units. This represents a year-on-year growth of 13.26% compared to 1,06,969 units sold in January 2025. However, on a month-on-month basis, volumes remained largely flat, declining marginally by 0.36% compared to 1,21,591 units in December 2025.

Tata Motors maintained its strong hold on the chart leading position with Nexon/EV with 23,365 units sold in January 2026. This represents a strong growth of 51.75% YoY and 20.59% MoM growth. Trailing behind was the Punch/EV, which registered 19,257 units with a growth of 18.64% YoY and 20.51% MoM. The Nexon and Punch together produced over 42,000 units, cementing Tata’s dominance in the sub-4 meter SUV segment.

Maruti Brezza took the third position with 17,486 units, a growth of 18.57% YoY, although it saw a marginal decline of 1.23% MoM. The Brezza continues to be one of Maruti’s most consistent performers in the segment. Maruti Brezza facelift has been spotted testing, and is expected to be launched soon. In contrast, Maruti Suzuki reported 13,353 units, marking a decline of 12.11% YoY and a sharp decline of 35.51% MoM. The December surge appears to have moderated in January, leading to an improvement in volumes.
Venue, Sonet maintained momentum
Hyundai Venue sales stood at 12,413 units, up 11.77% YoY and 20.26% YoY. Meanwhile, the Kia Sonet emerged as one of the fastest growing models among the established players, registering 10,998 units, up 52.88% YoY and 16.78% MoM.

Mahindra Hyundai Exeter sales stood at 5,621 units, down 7.37% YoY but largely flat MoM. Hyundai is preparing to launch the Exeter facelift next month. Skoda Kailak saw a notable growth of 159.26% year-on-year, reaching 3,220 units, although it declined by 12.21% compared to December. Toyota Tasar and Nissan Magnite registered 2,521 and 2,502 units respectively. Magnite registered a healthy growth of 31.55% MoM.

Renault Kiger declined by 6.89% YoY and 38.98% MoM to 703 units. Maruti Jimny sales grew 262.58% year-on-year to 591 units, albeit from a low base. Maruti has added the ADAS feature to the Jimny export variant, which is likely to be launched in India later this year. Kia Sciros reported 275 units, a sharp decline in both YoY and MoM, indicating significant volume improvement. Kia India plans to launch the Syros EV later this year.
While total volumes remained stable month-on-month, the sub-compact SUV segment continues to expand year-on-year. Established players like Tata, Maruti, Hyundai and Kia continue to dominate, but emerging names like Kialac are slowly making their presence felt. With a number of facelifts, new powertrain options and feature updates expected by 2026, competition in the sub-4 meter SUV sector is set to intensify.
