Sedan sales grew 22% year-on-year in April 2026, led by Maruti Dezire, which accounted for about 67% share in the segment alone.
Even though SUVs continue to dominate the passenger vehicle market, the sedan segment managed to register good year-on-year growth in April 2026. Total sedan sales last month stood at 35,218 units, up 21.92% compared to 28,887 units sold in April 2025. This led to an increase in volume of 6,331 units. However, on a month-on-month (MoM) basis, sedan sales declined by 8.52% compared to 38,500 units sold in March 2026.
Sedan Sales Breakup April 2026
Maruti Dezire continued its dominance in the sedan segment and emerged as one of the best-selling passenger vehicles in the country. Sales in April 2026 stood at 23,580 units, up 38.74% from 16,996 units sold in April 2025. Dezire alone had 66.95% share in the sedan segment.
Hyundai Aura took the second position with sales of 4,587 units, registering a year-on-year growth of 8.59% compared to 4,224 units sold a year ago. Honda Amaze stood second with 2,856 units and emerged as the fastest growing sedan among the major players with 41.46% YoY growth. Dezire, Aura and Amaze together capture about 88% share in the sedan segment.
Volkswagen Virtus recorded sales of 1,162 units, which saw a decline of 27.60% compared to April 2025. Combined sales of Tata Tigor and Tigor EV stood at 962 units, down 25.77% year-on-year. Hyundai Verna sales fell 13.93% to 865 units, while Skoda Slavia sales declined 20.80% to 830 units. Toyota Camry recorded a decline of 30.90% in sales to 199 units, while Honda City recorded the sharpest year-on-year decline among sedans, falling by 56.40% to 177 units. This is because Honda has just updated the City, which is likely to see a surge in sales in the coming months.
MoM sales decline across most sedan models
On a month-on-month basis, total sedan sales declined by 8.52%, with most models reporting lower volumes compared to March 2026. Maruti Dezire was the only sedan to register positive MoM growth. Sales increased by 11.10% from 21,224 units in March 2026 to 23,580 units in April 2026.
Hyundai Aura saw a sharp decline of 31.16% MoM, while Honda Amaze sales declined by 33.78% from 4,313 units sold in March 2026. Volkswagen Virtus saw a decline of 42.16% MoM, while Tata Tigor/EV saw only a marginal decline of 1.94%. Hyundai Verna sales declined by 38.17%, while Skoda Slavia sales declined by 6.43%.
Toyota Camry sales were down 9.13% MoM. Honda City saw the sharpest MoM decline among all sedans, falling 78.01% from 805 units sold in March 2026 to just 177 units in April 2026. While SUVs continue to attract huge customer demand in India, compact sedans like DZire, Aura and Amaze retain relevance due to their fuel efficiency, low ownership cost, practicality and strong fleet demand.
