sunday recap

Sunday’s first day of R4 matches produced more shocks and surprises. The big names fell short and the emerging players performed remarkably.

Chatrier’s opener pitted Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk against four-time RG champion Iga Swiatek. Dan Imhoff sat on the edge of his seat to watch Kostyuk deny Iga a chance at a clay-court title for the first time in two years. Not wanting to lose his seat, Dan stayed to watch Elina Svitolina, another Ukrainian, beat Belinda Bencic to set up a quarterfinal against Kostyuk.

With no matches to cover in the morning, Chris Oddo came out to interact with the fans. He hung out on the big scoreboard outside Court 9 and asked people for predictions of their men’s champions, and even met Jesper de Jong’s father. Given that many people picked Zverev for the title, Chris felt he should examine the German’s match against De Jong, in which Zverev faced some problems. Chris had another story to file Sunday: a thoughtful piece on Zack Swajda — currently in action at Chatrier — his 2026 season of grief off the court and success on it, and how he has navigated both.

Alex Sharp takes over from Lenglen for the all-Spanish clash between 34-year-old Pablo Carreño Busta and 19-year-old Rafael Joder. Youth was the winner on this occasion. Also taking advantage of the opportunity to retain her seat, Alex watched as No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva overcame Swiss Jil Teichmann and reached the quarterfinals here for the third consecutive year.

Victoria Chiesa kept an eye on Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca as he secured his first Grand Slam quarter-final with a late four-set victory over Casper Ruud.

And as always, Lee Goodall was on hand to make it all happen for you.
