Based on Renault Group’s RGMP modular platform, the Bridger sub-4-metre SUV will support ICE, hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

Renault is planning a major product offensive across global markets, as part of its ‘FutureReady’ strategic plan. From the Indian market perspective, products like the new generation Duster and the recently unveiled Bridger will play an important role.

Bridger is expected to emerge as one of the primary volume generators in India. The SUV will also be exported to places like the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Let’s look at more details of how Renault is planning its move with Bridger.

Bridger’s role in Renault’s future roadmap

Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive said that the bridger will serve as a central pillar in support of the brand’s future strategy. This clearly indicates that the Bridger is not only important for India but will also be a strategic product in Renault’s global lineup. The Bridger will be manufactured in India and will be launched here before its launch in overseas markets. Launch is expected by the end of 2027.

In line with Renault’s electrification goals and emerging market dynamics in India and around the world, the Bridger will be based on the rGMP multi-energy platform. Apart from internal combustion engines, the Bridger will also be available in hybrid and pure EV formats. It remains to be seen whether the ICE versions are launched first or the electrified models will also be available from day one. Renault has said that electric versions of the Bridger will have best-in-class efficiency.

The French carmaker plans to take a big step towards electrification, as part of its FutureReady roadmap. There are plans to launch a new range of EVs based on a new platform named RGEV Medium 2.0. This will bring significant improvements in efficiency, range and ultra-fast charging. Renault aims to achieve 100% electrification (sales) in Europe by 2030. For markets outside Europe, the target is 50% electrification by 2030. In India, Renault will launch 4 new products by 2030. These will include EVs and strong hybrids.

Bridger Competition, Market Position

The Bridger has great road presence and is designed for maximum comfort and spaciousness. However, there are quite a few tough rivals in the sub-4-metre SUV segment. The list includes Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV3XO, Toyota Tasar and Skoda Kailak. Volkswagen Terra can also be introduced in India in the future. The closest competition to the Bridger in India will be the Mahindra Vision S. The latter is also expected to launch in 2027.

The Renault Bridger will be positioned as a tough-looking, lifestyle-oriented subcompact SUV. While the existing bestselling subcompact SUVs have great looks, the rugged appeal will increase significantly with products like the Bridger. It comes with features like a boxy profile, sharp lighting elements, prominent front and rear bumpers, flared wheel arches, heavy-duty roof rails, large 18-inch alloy wheels and a tailgate-mounted spare tyre. The ground clearance of the SUV is 200 mm.

Despite being tough on the outside, the Bridger is designed for practicality and spaciousness on the inside. For rear passengers, knee space is 200 mm, which is the best in the segment. The boot is 400 litres, which is also the largest in the segment. For reference, the current largest boot in this segment is the Sciros’s 390 litres. The driving position of the bridger will be elevated, ensuring a clear, engaging view of the outside world.
