Maruti Baleno follows with 16,392 units, showing a strong growth of 32.65%, making it one of the major gainers in the segment. Maruti Swift, on the other hand, recorded a notable decline of 18.04% with sales of 14,545 units.

Maruti Alto also registered a good growth of 16.70% year-on-year with sales of 11,515 units, remaining relevant in the entry-level hatchback space. In the mid-segment, Tata Tiago (including EV) registered a decline of 10.41% YoY at 7,119 units. Meanwhile, the Hyundai i20 posted a solid growth of 26.10% to 5,614 units, indicating steady demand in the premium hatchback segment.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios remained steady at 5,032 units, showing a marginal growth of 0.84%. Toyota Glanza, basically a rebadged Baleno, witnessed a flat performance with 3,470 units and a marginal decline of 0.89%. Tata Altroz emerged as another strong gainer, registering a growth of 41.38% YoY with sales of 2,344 units, indicating better hold in its segment.

Maruti’s small hatchbacks Celerio and Ignis saw a significant decline. Celerio sales declined 40.34% to 1,353 units, while Ignis sales declined 34.21% to 1,250 units. The S-Presso saw the biggest decline in the segment, falling 87.36% year-on-year to just 226 units, highlighting weak demand in the entry hatchback space. Renault Kwid also registered a decline of 15.60% YoY with sales of 449 units.
MG Comet EV, albeit off a low base, registered a strong growth of 294.22% YoY with 682 units. The Citroen C3 also saw a sharp growth of 440% year-on-year, reaching 648 units. On the other hand, the Citroen eC3 EV declined by 67.80% with only 38 units, indicating inconsistent demand in the affordable EV hatchback segment.

MoM Trends – WagonR, Baleno Lead Growth
On a month-on-month basis, hatchback sales increased by 5.79% to 82,904 units in February 2026. WagonR and Alto were the major contributors, growing 14.38% and 17.66% respectively. Baleno also registered a good growth of 12.03% MoM.
However, the Swift remained largely stable with a marginal decline of 1.94%, while the Hyundai i20 and i10 NIOS also saw a marginal decline. Among smaller models, Celerio recorded a strong MoM recovery of 56.96%, while Ignis and S-Presso continued to decline.
Overall, the growth of the hatchback segment remains modest, with the strong performance of the Baleno, Alto and Altroz balancing the decline of the Swift, entry-level Maruti models and select EVs. Maruti continues to dominate the segment, but changing buyer preferences and growing demand for SUVs are clearly impacting traditional hatchback volumes.
