Production of the BMW F450GS has begun at the TVS Hosur plant and is expected to be launched by the first half (H1) of 2026.

In line with the changing market preferences, BMW Motorrad is transitioning from its 310cc single-cylinder platform to the new 420cc parallel-twin platform. The first bike to be launched in this range is F450GS. One of the standout features is the Easy Ride Clutch (ERC), which is specially designed to make riding easier for new users. The technical details of ERC have now been revealed. Let’s see the details.

BMW F450GS Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) Basics

The BMW F450GS ERC is classified as a semi-automatic system, which can also be seen with Honda’s electronic e-clutch and MV Agusta’s centrifugal smart clutch system (SCS). These differ from fully automatic systems such as Yamaha’s Y-AMT and Honda’s DCT. BMW has its own fully automated ASA system. However, these are usually seen with premium, high capacity bikes.

A semi-automatic transmission system is suitable for entry-level offerings, as they are economical to manufacture and install. Another advantage is that users can switch from automatic to manual whenever they want. Such flexibility may not be available with a fully automatic transmission. With the BMW F450GS ERC, the engine stall problem experienced by new riders has also been solved.

how it works?

BMW’s ERC relies on a simple centrifugal clutch, which is completely mechanical and does not require any expensive parts. In comparison, Honda’s e-clutch system uses an ECU and electronic actuators. The BMW ERC MV closely matches the setup used by Agusta. The clutch is disengaged when the engine is idling and disengages when the rider applies the throttle. BMW’s ERC is developed by Japanese brand FCC. There are several patents for this semi-automatic transmission.

The system combines a common multi-plate clutch with a centrifugal clutch. This allows the clutch to operate in auto mode while also providing a manual clutch lever. No changes are required in its engine or electronic parts. This means that ERC can be installed even on a non-ERC-equipped F450GS and it will work fine.

Inside the clutch, there is an extra thick friction plate with small weight. As engine speed increases, centrifugal force pushes these weights outward. This movement separates the plates and engages the clutch, allowing the bike to move. At low engine speeds, the springs pull the weight back toward the center. This disengages the clutch and prevents the engine from stalling.

The system has been carefully calibrated so that the clutch engages smoothly at the correct RPM. It also ensures that the clutch is active during riding including engine braking. It turns off only when the engine gets close to idle speed. Once the bike is moving, the clutch behaves exactly the same as a normal manual clutch. When paired with the quickshifter, riders can change gears without using the clutch lever.

BMW F450GS Launch Timeline – India and Global Markets

In Europe, the BMW F450GS is offered in four variants – Basic, Exclusive, Sport and Trophy. The starting price is £6990 (Rs 8.62 lakh), while the top variant is priced at £7760 (Rs 9.57 lakh). It is expected to launch in Europe in the March-May period. This bike can also be launched in India around this time. In the United States, the BMW F450GS is expected to be launched in late 2026 or early 2027.
