The recognition comes at a time when there is renewed interest in developing India’s motorsport ecosystem and potentially bringing Formula 1 back to the country.

Indian motorsport has received a significant boost with the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) receiving provisional recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF). The sport of motorsport in the country has been recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

According to the official government letter dated July 23, 2026, the recognition comes into effect immediately. FMSCI submitted its request for NSF recognition on June 11, 2026.

The ministry says this recognition gives FMSCI a major role in the promotion and development of motorsport in India. This permission was given after the government relaxed some provisions of the Indian National Sports Development Code, 2011.

These include restrictions relating to affiliation of at least two-thirds of the states and union territories of India, affiliation of district-level federations with the respective state/UT units and membership of the federation.

However, NSF recognition is currently provisional and comes with many conditions. FMSCI has been asked to amend its constitution and memorandum of association to comply with the National Sports Administration Act, 2025 and related rules within the stipulated time frame. The federation will also have to follow government guidelines covering election of office-bearers, financial accounting and audit, organization of national championships, complaint system, RTI compliance and anti-doping rules.

FMSCI will also have to set up respective State/UT bodies as per Government instructions. Its accounts will be open to inspection by authorized government representatives and will need to be audited by a practicing chartered accountant empaneled with the Comptroller and Auditor General.

recognition may be withdrawn

The government has also laid down conditions under which NSF recognition of FMSCI can be withdrawn. These include violations of the recognition conditions or FMSCI’s own constitution, non-compliance with Central Government instructions and cases where the federation is not functioning properly.

Recognition can also be withdrawn due to wrong information or misrepresentation of facts. Losing affiliation or recognition from the concerned international federation is another condition under which the government can withdraw the NSF status of FMSCI.

What does this mean for Indian motorsport?

This development is significant as motorsport in India has traditionally operated differently from many mainstream sporting disciplines. Formal NSF recognition provides FMSCI with stronger institutional status within India’s sporting framework and can potentially provide greater government support for the development of the sport.

The timing is also interesting. The government has recently shown interest in developing India’s motorsport ecosystem. A dedicated task force was announced to assess areas such as infrastructure requirements, investment potential, tourism benefits and the feasibility of hosting major international motorsport events.

India already has several international-standard racing facilities, with the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) being the most prominent. BIC hosted the Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix for three seasons between 2011 and 2013, and MotoGP India in 2023.
