Tata Motors launched the Sierra last year and began deliveries of the country’s most awaited SUV earlier this year. At launch, the Sierra got one NA petrol, one turbo petrol and one turbo diesel engine options. An electric version of the Sierra is also in the pipeline and is all set to have a grand launch on June 30, 2026.
The Sierra is expected to get one more fuel option apart from the usual trio of petrol, diesel and electric options. We are talking about the Sierra i-CNG, which was already in development with an AWD version. Now, a new Sierra test mule has been spotted with an emissions test kit, suggesting that the Sierra i-CNG has started testing. tha cng sierra Seen near Tata Motors plant On the outskirts of Pune.

Tata Sierra CNG spied?
Interestingly, the Sierra that was spied has been seen brand new blue shadeSimilar to Safari’s royal blue shade. The first thought that came to mind when looking at this Sierra test mule with the emissions test kit was that it might be a test for a CNG powertrain. This is because Tata Motors is keen to launch a CNG offering over the Nexon and the obvious candidates are the Curve and Sierra. Both Curv CNG and Sierra CNG are under development.
Even though both are C segment mid-size SUVs, they will take different routes when it comes to powertrains. This is because the Curve petrol is powered by a pair of 1.2L engines, both three-cylinder and both turbocharged. The Sierra petrol, on the other hand, is powered by a pair of 1.5L engines, both of which are 4-cylinder and one is NA petrol, while the other is turbo.

what to expect?
It is unclear whether Tata will offer the Sierra i-CNG with a 1.5L NA petrol engine (more likely) or a 1.5L turbo petrol engine (less likely). Either way, the Sierra i-CNG will come with two CNG tanks in the boot, which won’t create as much of a dent in the luggage area as a single-tank setup.

Looking at the other i-CNG vehicles in the portfolio, the Tata Sierra i-CNG is likely to get a spare wheel as well. Other features like engine start with CNG fuel, seamless switching and negligible power drop are also likely to be part of the package. Tata Sierra CNG launch Diwali may happen around 2026.
CNG Sierra to increase sales
Currently, Sierra sales are hovering between 6k units and 9k units per month. Average monthly sales of Sierra are 7,406 units and a total of 37,319 units have been shipped till date. Considering the increasing demand for CNG vehicles in India, the launch of CNG Sierra will provide a good boost to sales.
