The Arsenal midfielder has played just a few minutes in Spain’s last three matches after appearing again for the Champions League final.

For Arsenal, the update is encouraging after Merino missed a significant part of their title campaign.
Merino’s availability remains important for Spain, but given there were doubts over whether he would be fit for the tournament, the priority is not to ask too much of him too soon.
His return to normal training now brings him closer to assuming the full role after several carefully managed performances.
