You must have traveled by bus at some time or the other. Many people start feeling nauseous while sitting in the bus. Many people are so used to traveling in buses that they travel long distances with ease. But we claim that there will be many people who do not know such things about buses which are very unique. For example, do you know why the rear tires of the bus are not at the extreme rear of the bus, but in the middle? We claim that 90 percent people will not be aware of this fact!

Under the News18 Hindi series Ajab-Gajab Gyan, we bring for you such information related to the country and the world which will surprise you. Today we are talking about tires of buses. In fact, someone asked on the social media platform Quora – “Why are the rear tires of buses slightly forward instead of completely behind?” (Bus rear wheel facts) Some people have replied about this. Let’s see what their answers say.

What answers did people give on Quora?
A user named Parag Tripathi said- “The distance between the front and rear wheels of any vehicle is called wheelbase. The longer the wheelbase, the greater the turning radius of the vehicle. This means that the vehicle will occupy more space while turning a corner. This is one of the main reasons why the front and rear wheels are not placed at the extreme ends of the vehicle. This reduces the turning radius and improves maneuverability. One reason is that in buses which have engines installed at the rear, the wheels will have to be placed a little forward so that the engine can be serviced easily.” User named Arun said- “’Front overhang’ and ‘rear overhang’ are essential for an ideal chassis. The chassis of the bus needs to be an ideal chassis for easy steerability and better balancing, hence the wheels are like this.

According to science this is the reason
Let us now see what science says. According to the report of the Engineering Stack Exchange website, the load on the rear wheels is more because they provide power to the bus. In such a situation, if the wheelbase is less then the vehicle will have less mobility. The tire is also placed forward so that the weight can be distributed equally on the axle. Along with this, the lower part of the bus is like a bridge in which a steel beam goes from one end to the other. In such a situation, if the tire is at the rear, then the stress on that beam will be very high. The tire is also placed in the middle because not much load is put on the axle which rotates.
