Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga Wins Gold In The Men’s 67 Kg Final At CWG 2022

CWG 2022: Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifted a total of 160kg in the clean and jerk category for a grand total of 300kg, which is also a CWG record.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the men’s 67-kilogram weight class to extend India’s medal run in weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This is India’s second gold medal of the campaign, as star lifter Mirabai Chanu maintained her word and won gold on Saturday. By lifting 140 kg in the snatch competition, Jeremy set a new Commonwealth Games record.

He finished with a grand total of 300kg, which is also a new CWG record. His clean and jerk total was 160kg.

At the conclusion of his final attempt to lift 165 kilograms, which he was unable to complete, Jeremy appeared to be hurt, despite the close assistance of his Indian instructors. While the Indian national song played in the background, the young man appeared to be in excellent spirits as he was presented with the yellow metal on the podium.

The 19-year-old from Aizawl, Mizoram, won the gold medal in the 62kg division at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the 67kg division in the 2017 Commonwealth Championships.

The experienced lifter from Samoa, Vaipava Ioane, won silver with a combined lift of 293 kilograms, while Nigeria’s Edidiong Umoafia earned bronze with a lift of 290 kilograms.

When he successfully lifted 140kg on his second effort, Jeremy opened up a 10-kg lead over his closest competitor, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia. Initially, he weighed 136 kg.

In his final attempt, Jeremy aimed for 143 kg but was unsuccessful.

In Clean and Jerk, the champion of the 2021 Commonwealth Championships began with 154 kilograms, followed by 160 kilograms, but was unable to complete the 165-kilogram attempt.

Mirabai Chanu (gold), Sanket Sargar (silver), Bidyarani Devi (silver), and Gururaj Poojary (bronze) earned podium finishes in the weightlifting arena on Saturday, bringing India’s total medal haul to five.

Lalrinnunga, the son of national-level boxer Lalneihtluanga, first desired to follow in his father’s footsteps by donning the gloves. However, he turned to weightlifting because it required only strength to excel, which he found intriguing.
