How is aerogel made?
Aerogel can be made from different types of chemical compounds. The first aerogel was created by Samuel Stephens Kistler in 1931. He then made it from silica gel. After this, aerosols made of aluminum, chromium and tin dioxide were also made. In the late 1980s, carbon aerogels were created. You will be surprised to know that 50 percent to 99.98 percent oxygen can be present in it.
Features of aerogel?
Apart from being the lightest solid and extremely low density material, it is also one of the best thermal insulators. This means it can block heat completely. Even if we put it in boiling lava, nothing happens to it. This is the reason why it is used to control machinery heat in space projects.
Aerogels have also been used by the US space agency NASA for thermal insulation for Mars rovers and to insulate space suits. Aerogel also works as dry material. This means that they can absorb moisture. Therefore, people using airgel for a long time should wear gloves to avoid dry spots on their skin.
Pressing the aerogel gently usually does not leave a mark. If pressed too fast it will shatter like glass. This quality of this is called friability. Aerogels can be used to disinfect water and kill bacteria.
