How long is the history of this mountain?
The history of Mount Nemrut dates back to the 1st century BC. During this period, the Kingdom of Commagene ruled the east bank of the Euphrates River. It was a very powerful empire, whose culture reflected Hellenistic and Persian culture.
The king had built a tomb on the mountain
King Antiochus I of Commagene (69–34 BC) built a mausoleum on the summit of Mount Nemrut, dedicated to the gods and his ancestors, to show the power and wealth of his kingdom. Once upon a time, this tomb used to have three terraces, in which many big statues were installed. At some point, the heads of these statues were removed from their bodies, and now they are scattered all over the site, which you can also see in the video.
The eastern terrace of the tomb was considered the sacred center, where important sculptures and sections of relics are seen. The sculptures reflect the influence of Hellenistic and Persian art, as the faces of these sculptures reflect Greek art while their clothing and equipment reflect Persian art. Mount Nemrut is home to giant statues of the gods and ancestors of King Antiochus I. Seeing the historical importance of this mountain, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in the year 1987.
