In a study published in Nature Communications, molecular biologists Yuri Aratani and Takuya Yumura of Saitama University have shown how plants behave when they sense danger. Researchers released insects on the leaves of a weed called Arabidopsis thaliana and tomatoes. After this he continuously sprayed some substances on the nearby plants.

Apart from this, the Arabidopsis plant is a genetically engineered plant and its cells contain biosensors which glow green due to the addition of calcium ions. When the researchers made a video of this entire experiment, they found that signs of calcium were visible in the leaves of the plants which were not damaged.

Using bright sensors, they identified that many types of cells were responding to danger signals. They first start closing the ends of the leaves through an open part called stomata. In this way they discovered how, when and where plants respond to airborne warning signals.

The thing to note is that after receiving such a warning, plants not only stop some of their work or go to sleep for safety, but some plants can even change their color and shape. When some plants start releasing such substances, they attract animals who eat the insects that attack the plants.
This special kind of communication network was not within the reach of humans till now. But it works to give immediate information about the danger to nearby plants. Only last year, in a study, Israeli scientists had proved that plants can also “hear or feel” sounds.
