Every city on this earth remains in the news for different reasons. But some cities are known for their beauty. Whenever there is talk of the most beautiful cities in the world, the name of Rome is definitely included in it. Perhaps this is why it is said – Rome was not built in a day. There are many historical monuments here, which lakhs of people come to see. But do you know that the city which is so beautiful in itself, also has a mountain which is like a stain on the beauty of this place. There is also a mountain of 2000 year old garbage dump here. You may have seen the mountains of Delhi’s garbage dump, but this mountain may surprise you.

According to the report of the National Geographic website, near Horrea Galbae, on the outskirts of Rome, there is a small mountain (Rome garbage dump) covered with grass and trees, not far from the Tiber River. If seen from a distance, it will look like an ordinary mountain but in reality it used to be an ancient landfill, i.e. a place for throwing garbage. Garbage was thrown here in ancient Rome, hence it is also considered the biggest dumping ground of yesteryear.

The mountain is 100 feet high
This mountain is spread about 1 kilometer in width. Its base is in 20 thousand square meters and it is 35 meters i.e. more than 100 feet high. Now the question arises that if this mountain is made of garbage, then what is there in it, what is it made of? Actually, in old times people used to throw amphorae here. These used to be a kind of jars made of ceramic, in which people used to fill olive oil. This mountain is known as Monte Testaccio. According to the report of Amusing Planet website, there were more than 5 crore pieces of pots here, which as they accumulated came into the form of a mountain. About 600 crore liters of oil was transported in it.

Pots were used to store goods
According to National Geographic, prior appointment has to be taken to visit this place. To go inside one has to buy a ticket of Rs 370. According to Amusing Planet, in ancient times, along with oil, other types of goods were carried in these pots. The cost of making them was also very low. In olden times, there was a lot of demand for these for storing oil. When people used it, they would bring it to this place and throw it. In this way, gradually this mountain started getting higher. In the second century, about 1.3 lakh pots were dumped at this place in a year.
