During this winter season, the water of many rivers and lakes freezes. You must have seen many pictures of Dal Lake of Kashmir. Then how do fish survive underwater? Why doesn’t it die in the snow? Whereas according to science, most fishes cannot tolerate icy cold. Their body cannot bear it, then what happens that nothing happens to these fish buried under the ice. The same question was asked on the online platform Quora. Let us know the correct answer.

The answer to this question is hidden in science. In winter, cold air cools the water surface due to which its temperature starts decreasing. That means the density starts increasing. Due to this, water of higher density starts going down and water of lower density starts going up. The water above at 0°C turns into ice, but the water below, whose temperature is 4°C, cannot turn into ice. Only a few thick layers of ice accumulate on top of the water and the water below remains warm. Because at 4°C temperature, the expansion of water is the least and the density is the highest. The reason for freezing of the upper surface is the irregular spread of water.

If there is no snow cover…
If there is no layer of ice there, the water will become so cold that all the animals, fish etc. present in the water will die due to cold. The layer of ice becomes a boon for them because the water below remains warm. In other words, the temperature remains normal due to which fishes and aquatic creatures survive. The biggest thing is that when icy winds blow and due to the accumulation of ice layer, the cold winds are not able to touch the water below, due to this all the creatures remain alive.
