Since its launch, MG Gloster is well equipped and has brought VFM share in the large SUV segment. It competed primarily with the Toyota Fortuner and continues to do so. Now that the MG Magister has been unveiled, the Gloster was supposed to be positioned beneath it, but it has been discontinued completely. let’s take a closer look.
MG Gloster will be discontinued
At the 2025 India Mobility Expo, JSW MG Motor showcased its new flagship ICE SUV, the Major. At that grand stage, it was revealed that the Magister would be sold alongside the Gloster, which was MG’s flagship ICE SUV till that date. A year later, there have been new developments regarding MG’s current flagship SUV, the Gloster.

According to a recent report, JSW MG Motor India is on the verge of discontinuing its current flagship ICE SUV, the Gloster. This is an interesting turn of events for the company, which had earlier said that the Gloster would continue to be on sale with the Magister, positioned below the Magister where pricing is concerned.
The new Magister will essentially replace the Gloster in the company’s lineup. In a way, the Magister is a facelifted version of the Gloster with more equipment, more off-road prowess, larger dimensions on paper and a more impressive presence and an all-new and more modern design language, but still based on the Gloster underpinnings.
What next?
The primary rival of the Gloster is the Toyota Fortuner and styling wise, it also rivals the Isuzu MU-X. Price-wise, the MG Gloster rivals the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and the soon-to-be-launched Volkswagen Teron. Now that Gloster is at the end of its life cycle, MG Magister will rise to the occasion and take over the reins of Gloster.
JSW MG Motor India is looking at a production volume of around 1,000 units per month. Pre-booking for the MG Magister is now open and only pre-booked customers will get special benefits and priority services. MG Magister will be launched in India in April 2026 and deliveries will be in May 2026.
The Magister packs a new design language with revised fascia and tail section. On the inside, there are some design modifications and a number of new features and equipment have been added to make it more attractive compared to the Gloster. While the 2.0L twin turbo diesel engine has been retained, the MG Magister now gets three locking differentials. It is the only one in its segment to offer this.
