India’s sub-compact SUV segment (3.8 m to 4.0 m) continued its strong growth path in May 2026, registering total sales of 1,17,889 units. The segment registered a healthy growth of 19.12% year-on-year with an addition of 18,923 units, compared to 98,966 units sold in May 2025. The fight for the top spot was very close Just 478 units separating the segment’s two best-selling SUVs.
Sub 4 meter SUV sales May 2026
Maruti Suzuki Swift topped the sub-compact SUV chart with sales of 20,686 units in May 2026. Compared to 13,584 units sold in May last year, Fronx registered a strong growth of 52.28% with a gain of 7,102 units. It achieved 17.55% share in the segment. Tata Punch and Punch EV are in second place with combined sales of 20,208 units. The micro-SUV registered a growth of 53.87% compared to 13,133 units sold a year ago and was one of the highest volume gainers in the segment.
Tata Nexon and Nexon EV took the third position with sales of 19,100 units. SUV sales grew by 6,004 units compared to 13,096 units in May 2025, which translated into a growth rate of 45.85%. Together, Fronx, Punch and Nexon It accounts for more than 50% of all sub-compact SUV sales during the month. Maruti Brezza stood fourth with 13,425 units. However, it was one of the few flagship models to register a decline, with sales down 13.75% from 15,566 units sold in May 2025.
Hyundai Venue performed strongly with sales of 11,714 units, up 55.77% from 7,520 units sold last year. The venue was one of Fastest growing mainstream SUV in parts. Kia Sonet stood second with 9,707 units, registering a healthy growth of 20.52% year-on-year. Hyundai Exeter also recorded positive growth, with sales up 11.80% to 6,595 units.
Mahindra XUV 3XO and The model declined by more than 1,200 units year-on-year despite remaining among the segment’s top sellers. Skoda Kailak recorded sales of 3,443 units, down 30.43% compared to 4,949 units sold a year ago. Toyota Tasar volumes also declined by 17.76% to 2,496 units.
Nissan Magnite recorded sales of 1,665 units, up 24.81% over last year. Renault Kiger also posted a positive result with 656 units, up 19.06%. At the lower end of the ranking, Maruti Jimny sold 516 units, down 24.34% year-on-year. The Kia Sciros reported 961 units, which is significantly lower than the 3,611 units recorded in May 2025.
month-to-month performance
Compared to April 2026, the segment declined marginally by 1.05% and lost 1,255 units. The Frontex strengthened its lead with 9.86% MoM growth, while the Punch and Nexon grew by 5.76% and 5.37% respectively. Most rivals recorded month-on-month declines, including the Brezza (-4.95%), Venue (-5.68%), Sonet (-7.88%), Exeter (-18.54%) and XUV 3XO (-10.64%). An exception was the Kia Ciros, which recorded a sharp increase of 73.47% compared to April volumes.
Top 3 control half the market
The biggest gainers of the May 2026 sales were the dominance of the FrontX, Punch and Nexon. The three models together sold 59,994 units and accounted for about 51% of the entire sub-compact SUV segment. With a gap of less than 500 units between the Front and Punch, the battle for segment leadership remains one of the closest battles in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
Performance as per OEM
OEM-wise, Tata led the sub-compact SUV segment with sales of 39,308 units in May 2026, driven by strong demand for the Punch and Nexon. Maruti Suzuki remained at the second position with 34,627 units, supported by a strong performance from Ford. Hyundai took the third position with 18,309 units, registering good growth from Venue and Exeter. While Nissan and Renault recorded double-digit growth, Kia, Mahindra, Toyota and Skoda saw sales decline compared to May 2025. Tata and Maruti’s share in total segment sales was around 63% during the month.
