Electric car sales in India witnessed strong growth in April 2026, driven by new launches, increased EV adoption and expanding product options in the mass market and premium segments.
Following our previous report on ICE car retail sales, we now take a look at the electric car segment, which has started FY2027 on a very strong note. Electric car retail sales crossed the 23,000 unit mark in April 2026, registering 75.14% year-on-year (YoY) growth and 4.52% month-on-month (MoM) growth.
The segment is benefiting from growing customer acceptance, widespread charging infrastructure and several new product launches at various price points. Electric car market share also improved significantly to 5.8% in April 2026 from 3.7% in April 2025 and 5.1% in March 2026. Demand remained strong in both urban and rural markets, with SUVs dominating buyer preferences.

Electric car retail sales April 2026
Total electric car retail sales in April 2026 stood at 23,506 units, a huge increase of 10,085 units compared to 13,421 units sold in April 2025. Compared to sales of 22,490 units in March 2026, the segment registered a healthy MoM growth of 4.52%.
Tata Motors continued its dominance in the EV segment with 36.34% market share with sales of 8,543 units. The company recorded a strong growth of 77.17% at 4,822 units sold in April 2025, while MoM growth stood at 3.51%. Tata’s EV portfolio including Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV and the newly launched Harrier EV continued to grow volumes.

Mahindra took the second position with 5,413 units sales and 23.03% market share. Strong demand for the company’s new electric SUV led to sales growth of 63.98% YoY and 3.24% MoM. JSW MG Motor remained at third position with sales of 5,006 units. While the company recorded a healthy growth of 32.54% YoY, sales declined marginally by 2.63% on MoM basis.
Vinfast emerged as one of the biggest gainers in April 2026. The Vietnamese automaker recorded sales of 1,232 units, registering a sharp growth of 78.29% MoM compared to 691 units sold in March 2026. Maruti Suzuki also made a strong entry in the list with sales of 1,231 units, likely driven by early demand for the E Vitara electric SUV.

Hyundai recorded sales of 516 units, which saw a decline of 30.92% year-on-year, although sales improved by 8.40% compared to March 2026. BYD India reported sales of 469 units, up 17.84% YoY and 13.29% MoM. Kia India recorded sales of 342 units and achieved the highest YoY growth rate of 905.88%, although its MoM sales declined by 25.33%.
Luxury Electric Car Retail Sales April 2026
Good demand is also being seen in the luxury EV segment. BMW India sold 300 electric vehicles in April 2026, registering a growth of 108.33% YoY, although MoM sales declined by 31.35%. Mercedes-Benz India reported positive growth in sales at 104 units on both YoY (+19.54%) and MoM (+7.22%) basis. Tesla India recorded sales of 43 units during the month, while Volvo recorded sales of 41 units.
Citroën reported 25 units. Other EV makers contributed 241 units to the total, which is significantly higher than the 16 units sold in April 2025 and the 230 units sold in March 2026.
